CAVENDER'S
All Purpose Greek Seasoning

Once in a while you taste something and you start telling people about it. You call your mom and ask if she's tried this. You have friends over and you say, "Taste this, this is good shit, man."
This is it. Yum. I mean YUM. I used to be a big fan of Jane's Crazy Mixed Up Salt, which is still good stuff. But I have a new lover and this is it. Daaaayam.
Ok, I'm a foodie nerd. I'll probably write an essay about KitchenAid one of these days. I watch Food TV when I can. Cooking is fun and eating good food is fun.
How I found Cavender's: I was actually on a hunt for Turkish Coffee. It's hard to find around here. Back in Chicago there was a little place we called "The Mexican Store" that had all kinds of good stuff, not just Mexican. They had Turkish Delight; all you Narnia fans know what that is. It's good too, by the way. So this store had Turkish Coffee and it's great if you like big black strong throbbing pulsating.. oh, sorry, I was talking about coffee.
So after I moved to Dallas, guess what? I can't find Turkish Coffee anywhere that's convenient for me to get there too often. My sister gave me a little packet of Turkish when I was up visiting (what a very awesomely cool sister I have!) but once that was gone it just made me want Turkish even more. So I went online looking for it and I found Parthenon Foods. This is a great online market if you're missing some of the foods you had back in the old country. You know it's usually dumb to order just one thing if there are other things you want. Combined shipping is cheaper. So I browsed around, orderd some Turkish Delight and some Illy Espresso. I saw this and thought "Mmm, Greek. I like Greek food. This might spice things up." so I ordered some Cavender's too.
As it turns out, it's 100 times better than I expected, and how often does that happen? The sad thing about Cavender's, and I don't know why, is that you can't find it in stores anywhere, or very rarely. I just took a minute and did some Googling and found several ways to buy it, but you're probably not going to find it at the grocery store. It looks like it's made by Jane Cavender over in Arkansas and this is all she makes, but when you have ONE good product, stick to it lady!
So you're saying to yourself that you don't know how to cook Greek food. No worry. Whatever you ate for dinner last night would have been better with Cavender's on it. Hamburgers, mac and cheese, vegetables, soups, steaks, salads, eggs, pasta, fish... hell, even a TV dinner could be something special. You can cook it up in there or just sprinkle it on like salt. I bet you'll just forget about salt and put this in your salt shaker once you try it. There is also a salt-free version that I'll probably keep around for my hypertensive relatives.
Our good friend Jane also has a lot of good recipies on her site if you want more ideas how to use this fantastic spice blend.

NO! I don't make any money for advertising it. It's just good and I wanted to tell someone. Here are a few places to buy some or you can just do a Google search on "Cavender's Greek Seasoning"

UPDATE 9-14-06 --- The Kroger store down the road from me has Cavenders! Maybe it's a southern thing or maybe it's catching on. Anyway, at least I won't have to mail order it when I want more. G'night!
